The following pictures show roughing out a set of Roof Rails. Remember from a previous post, the ROOF RAIL ASSEMBLY is made of two pieces of wood sandwiched together, which is then fastened to the tops of the quarter headers by means of tenons in the Hinge, Latch and Rear Quarter pillars, and by screws through the inside of the Quarter Headers.
Here is a roof rail bottom section, which sits directly on top of the quarter headers. The outside edge is slightly curved to follow the body line of the car, while the inside is contoured to match the angles of the wood structure created by the quarter assemblies.
Here's a top and a bottom. These are to be considered rough patterns. I have not actually decided whether I will use new wood to make these like they were originally or use the ones that came in the roof kit. (Those in the kit are made incorrectly). The pieces in the wood kit were pre-bent in a jig, making them have a fixed convex surface from one end to the other along the length of the piece. That is something that cannot be taken out if it proves to be too much.
Here are the four pieces that make up the side Roof Rails. Each Front end (to the right of the photo) is left long to compensate for the location of the lap joint created by the Front Header.
